We have a book club at work and, to be honest, I try hard not to buy books from it! I am lucky enough to own lots of lovely books already, and I am limited on storage space. Plus I like to support my local library. However, I was instantly drawn to this book by the New Covent Garden Food Co ‘A Soup for Every Day’.
A short while ago I made a delicious lentil soup and it reminded me that soup can be really tasty… it’s just, in the past, I have not had a great deal of success making it. I know that sounds a little crazy. I mean, how hard can it be? But for some reason, I just struggle to make decent soup. Having such success with my lentil soup gave me some confidence in my soup making skills, and armed with this book, I plan to become a Soup-Making Goddess.
The book does what it says on the tin. It has 365 soup recipes in it – one for every day of the year. The recipes fit with the time of year – for example you can easily find a soup for a hot summer’s evening or a freezing winter’s day (like today). You can find a soup for Valentine’s day, or one for Halloween. It’s also exciting to check out which soup falls on your birthday! My ‘birthday soup’ isn’t that exciting, unfortunately – plum tomato and basil.
So what about the recipes? They are nicely laid out with one recipe per page. They are easy to understand and the months are colour-coded (colour-coding pleases me enormously). There are no photographs of the finished soups, which I suppose, could be a criticism. But if they’d included photos, this book would be massive. Also, soup doesn’t always look that interesting. So I can see why they left the photos out!
The index at the back of the book is really useful – main ingredients are indexed. So if, for example, you had some leftover chicken, you could easily locate all of the chicken soup recipes.
Recipes that have caught my eye already include…
Smoked mackerel and horseradish
Bangers, mash and savoy cabbage
Peach soup flambe
Baby vegetables and minted lamb broth
So far I have made the Moroccan Lamb and Chickpea soup (which is really more of a stew, photo below)…
I am very excited about this book and cannot wait to embark on my soup making journey with it! You can get the book on Amazon UK: A Soup for Every Day: 365 of Our Favourite Recipes (New Covent Garden Soup Company).

Note: I was not sent a review copy of this book, this is a totally honest review meant to encourage my readers to explore the world of soup making!
