Sewing Socks

Socks4

I’ve been doing a lot of knitting recently, so I thought I’d take a short break (less than 24 hours to be honest!) and do a little sewing.  I had some hand-sewing to do (buttons… boring!) and hubby needed some trousers hemming (also quite dull).  While I had the machine out, I thought I’d have a go at making Maria Denmark’s fleece socks.  I am not quite ready to sew the garments in my Sewing With Knits Craftsy course yet, so this was a good pattern for a quick sewing fix.

Maria’s patterns are easy to follow; I have already made her Kirsten Kimono Tee, so I was familiar with the process involved in laying out and cutting PDF patterns.

The socks turned out well. I also made hubby a pair. He opted to have his with the seams on the outside, which looks slightly odd, but they are smooth on the inside, so more comfy.

I always learn something when I get my sewing machine out. This time, I learned that it is virtually impossible to photograph your own feet in a flattering way!

Thanks for the pattern Maria!

  1. I like those a lot! I have a sewing machine, in my closet. It has not seen the light of day in years. My grandmother and I used to sew together because she was one of those women who could make a pattern out of a paper grocery bag and then she would make her blouse, skirt, whatever without a second glance. She has been gone a long time now, and I just haven’t been able to pull out my sewing machine to see what I could do alone. I just remembered that one of her daughters, my aunt Dorcas, can sew like she used to do.. Maybe I need to get her over here.. Hmmm.. Love your socks, Martine! They look really warm and cozy!

  2. I love these Martine! What a great idea too! Time to hit the thrift shops for those unwanted fleece blankets i think ;-)

  3. They are fabulous—would be comfy in rain boots, too! You’re so very talented!!

    • Thanks Libby. I have terrible trouble sourcing fabric and was going to ask you the same. I use Ebay, which is a terrible risk really and I have not always been pleased with what I have purchased. What about you?

      • I was hoping you’d have all the answers!
I’ve bought a bit of Liberty print off eBay and it’s been great, but then, I know what I’m getting. I love Raystitch and The Village Haberdashery but neither ave a great selection of stretch. I’ve just discovered another website called myfabric.co.uk and it seems to have a fab selection of stuff, especially cotton/spandex stretch, but I haven’t actually bought anything there yet. Merchant and mills looks like they have beautiful monochromatic linens and wools etc but pricey. I’d love more suggestions!!
